On September 8, 2023, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred near the town of Oukaïmedene in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The earthquake caused widespread damage and resulted in the deaths of over 2,900 people while injuring 5,500 more. The historic buildings in Marrakesh were also significantly damaged. The earthquake affected millions of people in the region and was felt in neighboring countries as well. It was the strongest and deadliest earthquake in Morocco since 1960.
